The venue may have moved, but the carnival ball lives on
Now in their new home in Centro, Scala's traditional balls live on, lead by the Baile do Cordão da Bola Preta, hosted by the oldest street bloco in town. The five days of partying continue with Mangueira samba school's ball on 18 February, but the big one, the Baile da Cidade Maravilhosa, occupies Carnival Sunday. Monday's newcomer, the Baile da Boa, has the added attraction of free beer all night long, before the world famous Baile Gala Gay (better known as Scala Gay) sees things off in flamboyant style on Tuesday.
