The Rio+20 focus point in Zona Sul
Climate change, forest management and gender equality are among the items on the agenda at Humanidade 2012, a ten-day Rio+20 parallel event at the Copacabana Fort uniting workshops, lectures and exhibitions in one of the city's most geographically blessed and historically interesting locations jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. Divided between spaces boasting titles like 'The World We Live In Room' and 'Humankind Auditorium', the subtleties of the global issues at hand are largely ridden over by the greater concerns; man's impact on the planet, and, at its most dramatic, changing the course of civilisation to avoid catastophic environmental consequences.
Lecturers will include Jacques Cousteau's grandson Fabien and carioca artist Vik Muniz, alongside former Brazilian Minister for the Environmnet Marina Silva. The event is also a celebration of Brazilian human- and bio-diversity, however, including a library of over 10,000 books chosen by a select panel of well-known local names and faces, and exhibitions studying the changes that the city is currently undergoing as it pushes towards massive levels of development.
