In a celebration of some of the city's more unsung cultural gems, the organisers of ArtRio have planned out fifteen tours of the Rio's art and architectural hotspots. From the Art Deco gems of Copacabana to a curious celebration of the colour blue, we have selected five of the most interesting, but the full list can be found on the official website.
1. Circuito Zona Portuária
The redevelopment of Rio Port is celebrated with a glimpse at some of the attractions that overlook the reawakening industrial heart of the city. From the baroque glow of the São Bento monastery to the unusual Albamar restaurant and Mauá's hidden gems.
2. Circuito Morro da Conceição
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city and home to the famous Pedra do Sal samba street party, the crumbling fort and classic Portuguese architecture are among the highlights.
3. O Rio Acontece na Cinelândia
For those less familiar with Centro's impressive gems, the tour of the Theatro Municipal, National Library, and Portinari's beautiful tiles provides a perfect catch up.
4. Circuito Modernista - Copacabana
From the Oscar Niemeyer-designed SESC building to Roberto Burle Marx's huge project to elevate and pave the length of Copacabana's boulevard, it may not be to everyone's taste, but modernism's impact on Rio is unavoidable.
5. Circuito Vik Muniz
The celebrated carioca artist criss-crosses the city to unveil some of the best public artworks, including the 'Baleia' ('Whale') in Leme by Ângelo Venosa and the beautiful writing project under the viaduct in Caju (pictured).
