If you've walked past Circo Voador in recent weeks, you can't have helped but notice the impressive chronology of every show ever held in the cult live music venue running along its external fence. National favourites like Caetano Veloso, Monobloco and Orquestra Voadora and international artists from the Ramones to Primal Scream appear having played their part in the 4,000 or so events held over the 30 years of its existence.
A collection of 68 photographs and a handful of videos from across the period is unveiled this month, telling the story of the venue that began life next to Arpoador Beach in 1982, fell out of favour with the council, and was moved to the then prostitution-riddled Lapa. The relocation merely added a dose of rock 'n' roll credentials to the brand, though, and Circo Voador mark II became the home of emerging young bands and underground artists from around the world. An essential slice of carioca culture.
