With a strikingly unique body of work under her belt, the Rio de Janeiro artist Adriana Varejão has become an important player in the international art world, as evidenced by this major, long-running retrospective.
Mining rich seams of classical imagery and technique, Varejão’s work is accomplished, original, and unafraid to shock – witness the gaping flesh wounds she creates on maps and in otherwise idyllic-looking tropical landscapes, as in Paisagens, and the meaty innards she makes visible under crumbling walls. The commentary on Brazil's colonial past is explicit in its rawness.
Featuring works in all the many media Varejão commands, from painting to sculpture and installation, this show, ‘Histórias às Margens’ (‘Stories/History in the Margins’) brings together works from collections and institutions including the Tate Modern and the New York Guggenheim, plus a brand new large-scale artwork in her trademark Portuguese-style tiles.
