Cais do Oriente
As part of MAR's opening flourish, O Abrigo e O Terreno (The Shelter and the Earth) is the first in a series of exhibitions looking at art and society in Brazil, the changing social relations and urban reforms fundamentally altering the city and country, both for better and for worse. The Zona Portuaria regeneration, of which MAR is the flagship, is itself a perfect case in point, with the nearby demolition of houses to make way for 'urban progress' made even more poignant in the light of the stories told by the 56 artists displayed throughout the ground floor. The final piece, a recreation of their Laranjeiras favela home by the Projeto Morrinho, was displayed on the Southbank during the Brazil in London season, and makes for an unlikely sight in such grand surrounds. Doubtless just what the curators Paula Herkenhoff and Clarissa DIniz, were hoping.
