An official parallel event of ArtRio, Art Rua 2013 will occupy two vast warehouses in nearby Gamboa and offers a rich, diverse programme of events and exhibits to entice the hoards from the more mainstream action up the road. Cramming in workshops, film projections, lectures, a gastro-space, concept store (in partnership with Homegrown and Sala de Estar) and an outdoor live music stage, the Felipe Bardy-designed space is set to be a sustainable refuge of artistic endeavour.
The main space, a former train depot, will be filled with graffiti from local heroes like Toz and SWK as well as international names like the Aussie crew Dabs&Myla. In and around the neighbourhood, meanwhile, Wall Projects arrives from successful stints in New York's Meatpacking District and Miami's graf mecca Wynwood to bring the culture to the streets in the hope of creating a permanent new home for the artform.
Friday and Saturday nights will also see a DJ takeover featuring the hip hop and funk styles of Wladimir Gaspar and Pathy de Jesus (Fri) and bumping house music from Triple Crown and High Class Underground (Sat).
