Cais do Oriente
The man behind the impressive pyrotechnic show at Beijing's 2008 Olympic opening ceremony, Chinese artist Cai Guo–Qiang, exhibits a selection of his remarkably varied, impressively proportioned work simultaneously at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and Centro Cultural dos Correios in August and September.
The enormous wooden aircraft-carrier thrusting upwards in the main hall of the CCBB gives an immediate idea of what to expect from Guo-Qiang's imagination, a homage to Chinese invention that is surrounded by his aircraft designs. It is the 'povo', or 'people', to whom he dedicates his work, and their creative ingenuity and romantic determination that helped confound engineering norms and spurred their country's modernisation, leaving deep social, political and cultural legacies.
Guo-Qing's work with gunpowder is also well represented, however. The huge piece 'Carnival Rehearsal' places the Chinese peasants in the context of a Rio Carnival, which he witnessed first hand in 2012.
