Finding poetry in the everyday
Carlito Carvalhosa takes pieces of everyday landscape and turns them into reflective, sensual pieces of work. Utilitarian materials including pieces of wood, florescent lamps and mirrors are sculpted together to show depth, light and shade, with one work in this exhibition incorporating the ever-incandescent view of Ipanema beach. Originally from São Paulo, Carvalhosa now lives and works in Rio de Janeiro but has earned international fame since becoming the first Brazilian artist to show his work in the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art in New York with his installation, A Soma dos Dias (The Sum of Days) from August until November this year. Lugar Comun (Ordinary Place) continues with that theme of the everyday, using panes of white-painted eucalyptus wood throughout the exhibition space, while the other four rooms use props including 27 bright lamps and gossamer-thin fabric which is moved by the action of the air conditioning in the room. The artist has previously shown his work in France, Holland and Cuba as well as New York and a large number of solo shows in São Paulo.
