An exhibition of two very different photographers, both key figures in their respective countries
The ever awe-inspiring Instituto Moreira Salles is the home for two contrasting photography exhibitions until the end of February, showing the works of Brazil's Thomaz Farkas and Manuel Álvarez Bravo, a key influence in his home country of Mexico. In fact, Thomaz Farkas was a Hungarian immigrant to Brazil in 1924, arriving in São Paulo with his father who sold photography equipment for a living. In 1957, he travelled to the new city of Brasília, documenting the advent of Brazil's new capital in a photojournalism style which has since been much-imitated in his adopted home. The collection of more than 100 photographs, chosen with his family before his death in March this year, documents Thomaz Farkas' career and important moments in the history of Brazil itself.
Alongside his work will be more than 250 photographs from the collection of Mexican Manuel Álvarez Bravo, who documented the repercussions of his country's revolution on its people and culture as his central theme. The title, Fotopoesia, refers to the poetry he captures in his images, which form part of the institute's permanent collection.
