An exhibition of previously unseen work by the Gaúcho artist Fernando Lindote is the latest draw at the CCBB, recent home of the UK's Antony Gormley. Like that great show, '1971' also assumes the air of an installation given the size of some of the works on display, Lindote's paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and video installations displaying a certain hybrid approach that effortlessly holds the viewer's interest. The sculpture from which the exhibition takes its name is comprised of 2,000 comics drawn by the artist himself and referncing the military dictatorship, the year 1971 being when he also began making cartoons for a newspaper in Rio Grande do Sul. Due to the phallic nature of a lot of the drawings, however, you might not want to take the kids, or a first date for that matter.
