The artist Luiz Ernesto presents his first individual exhibition for five years with ten previously unseen works, depicting the banal and everyday through different mediums from painting to photography. The exhibition coincides with the launch of the book ‘Quase Poemas’ - 'Almost Poems' - featuring the best of the artist’s portfolio from across a 30-year career.
The expectation conjured by the five-year hiatus is justified through the meticulous and detailed work using unusual materials like epoxy resin and fibreglass. After taking photographs of the objects, the artist begins by laminating a plaque in fibreglass, alternating the layers with the resin and pigments and inserting the phrases or 'poem'.
Talking about the phrases, Ernesto said: “I don’t have the pretension to say that they are poems, but I would say that they almost are. The words add weight to my work and these phrases do not merely complement the images, rather they are a fundamental part.”
