One of Rio's classic botequims
Bar Lagoa's signature food is German, a tradition dating back to 1934 when the place was founded as Bar Berlim (the name was changed during World War II). But don't expect German formality or efficiency here. The waiters, with their white coats and even whiter hair are more likely to be snappish than snappy but that's part of Bar Lagoa's plentiful charm. Check out the mirrors in the doors, the soft pink Italian marble and the little internal balcony where the orchestra used to play. Better still, sit on the patio and gaze at the Lagoa while sipping a cold chopp and picking on an appetizer of white or red sausage. Most nights are full, with the patio tables especially in demand, but if you're lucky enough to land a table close to the street, apply bug repellent to any bare legs.
