A look back through the 30-year career of the most famous siblings to ever take to the director's chair
A retrospective of the Cohen brothers’ directorial magic takes place from 10-22 July, with all fifteen of the duo’s films shown in every film purist’s dream format - original 35mm - at the CAIXA Cultural cinema. A quick perusal of the films is a trip through some of the more memorable movies of the last 25 years, from 1987’s Raising Arizona featuring Nicholas Cage’s best performance to date right through to True Grit, passing via classics like Fargo and The Big Lebowski along the way.
The list of awards Ethan and Joel Cohen’s work has received tells its own story, with six Academy Awards (albeit shared between just two films, the brutal No Country For Old Men and Fargo) amid a wealth of nominations. Far from mainstream in style, however, the Cohen brothers’ films are tied together by a darkly comic narrative and some of the best unhinged, slacker and just downright unlucky characters ever to grace the big screen (look no further than Jeff Bridges’ The Dude in The Big Lebowski for proof). Back on their best form ever thanks to 2010’s True Grit, The Cohen Brothers - Two Brilliant Minds is a wonderful way to recap the refreshing sideways shove they have given Hollywood in the last 30 years.
