In a perfect example of the way today's street Carnival has ballooned into a multi-million real beast of a city takeover, in 2003 Empolga ás 9 began as a group of friends having a little batacuda jam by the famous Ipanema beach. This year they expect another 50,000-strong crowd to gather for their mixture of samba, rock, funk, coco, frevo and forró, taking in classic Brazilian composers along the way. Their first effort on 3 February will stay put at their spiritual home, whilst on 9 February they hit Copacabana's posto 6 for a march along the water's edge.
