Readying themselves for their 95th Carnival parade, Cordão da Bola Preta today attracts millions rather than tens or even hundreds of thousands of revellers, so if for some reason you are feeling ambivalent about Carnival this year under no circumstances think about going 'for a quick look'. This is all-or-nothing action. Seven hours of pounding drums, frenetic dancing and sardine-like crowds crammed into Rio's oldest and biggest street bloco, with an early enough start to leave the afternoon free for further forays into the action once you get the bug. Starting at the top of Avenida Rio Branco where it meets Avenida Preisdente Vargas, this is definitely one to get swept up in.

Getting there: The nearest Metrô stations will be closed, so get off at Cinelândia, Carioca or Central and walk with the masses to the concentrção (meeting point).
