Monobloco played a huge part in the reinvigoration of the city's blocos at the start of the century thanks to the modern thrust and chutzpah they managed to instil in the (whisper it) somewhat tired samba standards, complete with a few global pop hits thrown in to spread their audience even wider. After a month of warm-up shows in Lapa, today is the big one, their annual, Sunday-after-Carnival, million-strong-crowd-attracting blowout that takes in the full length of Avenida Rio Branco, bringing the centre of the city to a samba-ing standstill. The band gathers where the road meets Avenida Presidente Vargas, trundling towards Cinelandia for around midday, so get there early.
