The 2012 album Sun marked a clear departure from the sound that fans had come to expect from Chan Marshall, the American singer-songwriter better known as Cat Power. On last year's record, Marshall ditched the distinctive melancholic, soulful melodies that characterised previous album The Greatest, as well as the rock riffs that permeated Free with the help of one half of French house duo, Cassius. As a result, Sun, her first original material for six years, is a bright, uptempo electronic pop album making prominent use of synthesizers and auto-tune, whilst maintaining the beautifully haunting voice and powerful, introspective lyrics for which she found fame.
If Marshall's latest effort is evidence of an evolution of her sound, the decision to chop off her signature, retro-looking bangs for a short bob shows another side of her transformation. After years battling against depression and after a joyous 2010 show at the same venue, the return of Cat Power to Circo Voador should prove celebratory.
