Winehouse last year, Florence this year - the Summer Soul Festival is determined to make its mark in a packed musical calendar
Currently riding high on rave reviews of the traditionally tricky second album, Ceremonials, Florence and the Machine find their way to the HSBC Arena stage for a first ever appearance in Rio as part of the Summer Soul festival. Having teased fans with clips of What The Water Gave Me the first hit proper Shake It Out proved that there was life after debut LP Lungs, and plenty of it. Hawaiian warbler Bruno Mars will bring his rather more tepid brand of soul, whilst local favourite Seu Jorge is a welcome addition to the line up on the back of his latest record Músicas para Churrsco - Volume 1.
The spirit of last year's appearance by Amy Winehouse lives on in some respect through the appearance of her talented teenage goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, who has two albums under her belt well before her sixteenth birthday (which comes two weeks after the show). Perhaps most interesting of all for those looking for a dash of something really new, then, will be Rox, the band who, with hints of Lauryn Hill and Incognito intertwining to fine effect, have released just one album (Memoirs in 2010) since signing to London's legendary Rough Trade Records.
