Since carioca fans lapped up their show in Meier's Imperator venue late last year, Tame Imapla have released one of the most talked about albums of the last 12 months and rocketed from promising upstarts to indie stardom. With a sound that seems to have been beamed straight from the late-1960s, psychedelia à la Cream, Pink Floyd’s short-lived era with Syd Barrett or the Jimi Hendrix Experience, band leader Kevin Parker creates atmospheric, multi-textured tracks that, thanks to an uncanny John Lennon-esque voice, also conjures up The Beatles at their wigged-out best.
Snapped up by hip Aussie label Modular on the back of a heavy Myspace buzz (myspace.com/tameimpala), in 2008, the band released an eponymous debut EP before finally pulling together their first studio album, the excellent Innerspeaker – widely considered one of the best albums of 2010.
Two years on, and Lonerism was the record on everyone's lips. At once soaring, psychedelic and stomping, lead single 'Mind Mischief' was as catchy and dreamy as anything by that lost genius Shuggie Otis, and, together with the excellent video, was so good that it begged playing, replaying and playing again. Expect yet another packed, Queremos-fuelled indie celebration at Circo Voador.
