The carnival dons limber up for their big day with a Friday night Lapa residency throughout February
Once they get going, nobody can ignore the infectious swing of the Monobloco bateria. National and international hits are covered in their own inimitable way, the creativity and timing of the percussion unrivalled anywhere among today's carnival contenders. For ten years now, the people who gave street blocos a much needed injection of vitality have been touring Brazil and, latterly, the world, offering a little bit of a break from the norm and reinterpreting everyone from Clara Nunes and Gilberto Gil to O Rappa in the process. For the month of February they will be honing their new set every Friday to a packed Fundição Progresso ahead of the big one on the Sunday after Carnival itself.
