Influential Mancunian heroes brave the Rio waters as part of their reunion tour
Cult Manchester band The Happy Mondays announced the original line-up's first ever reformation at the start of 2012 and thankfully wasted no time in setting out their plans for a world tour, just as long as a trip to South America doesn't tempt them back into the dark side of their well-documented addictions. The band's second album Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches remains a benchmark for its madcap blend of funk, acid and rock, the singles Kinky Afro and the imperious Step On sounding as fresh and vibrant today as they ever did thanks in part to the production of Paul Oakenfold.
1992's follow-up LP Yes Please was a somewhat less coherent affair and signalled the start of a fiteen-year period of inactivity. Infamous frontman Shaun Ryder went on to further success fronting cult '90s band Black Grape and maintained his profile with the Gorillaz collaboration Dare, whilst band mascot Bez resorted to an appearance on Celebrity Big Brother to augment his occasional DJ sets. In 2007 they released Uncle Dysfunctional to a mixed reaction, but along with fellow Mancunians Stone Roses return this year with their original line up, including Shaun's brother Paul who had vowed never to perform with his sibling again following the split in 2000. Whatever the quality of the performance, there'll not be too many dull moments at Circo Voador.
