Former Smiths frontman makes a welcome return to Brazilian territory for the first time in twelve years
A lot of water has passed under the Morrissey bridge since he was last on stage in Brazil. Heavily outspoken on all matters from politics to fellow musicians and the rocky ground of racism, he has courted controversy (not to mention the ire of the FBI) pretty much everywhere he has gone. Musically, however, he hit something of a purple patch in the same period, with three albums You Are The Quarry, Ringleader of the Tormenters and Years of Refusal hitting some of the high notes, critically and commercially, of the classic material he recorded in the aftermath of The Smiths' break up.
He has always been able to polarise opinion, a facet that tends to make his live shows unpredictable, emotional and occasionally volatile (In 2009 in Liverpool he was hit on the eye by a bottle (at his own gig) and stormed off stage), not to mention golden press fodder for music hacks. The current tour has already taken in North America and Mexico, and heads south to give his Latin American fans the personal rendition of classics like Action Is My Middle Name that they have been waiting for, as well as beloved Smiths material like I Know Its Over and I Know Its Over. All of which adds up to a bit of a must-see show.
