Two titans of Carnival go head to head tonight, both made famous for reinventing the wheel. Monobloco were partly responsible for the reinvigoration of the city's blocos at the start of the century thanks to the modern thrust and chutzpah they managed to instil in the tired samba standards, complete with a few global pop hits (enter Stevie Wonder and co.) to keep things lively. Sargento Pimenta, meanwhile, took the Fab Four's back catalogue and gave it a heavy-duty samba re-rub in time for 2010, when they took Botafogo by storm one rainy afternoon and haven't looked back since. Quite the double header, and a treat for anyone who won't be sticking around the city until February.
