The theatre's rich place in the cultural fabric of Rio continues unabated
On 22 March 1934, the Teatro Rival opened to the public for the first time with the appropriately named production 'Amor' ('Love'). In a celebratory era for the city, the occasion was marked with considerable fanfare and pride, and although this corner of Centro no longer retains all of the glamour of that era, the love for this crumbling old venue remains undiminished. Under the sponsorship of Petrobras since 2002, the agreement helps offer half-price tickets to midweek shows (Tue-Wed) and 25 percent off Thursdays to Saturdays, helping maintain a strong public presence that keeps the shows and artists coming back.
