They may not be the most fashionable flip-flop in all the land these days, but by hell they know how to throw a party and try and convince the world they might be once more. In fact, make that nine parties, because for three weekends in a row, Rider will be taking over the Jockey Club's most spacious of spaces and filling it with some of the sprightliest talent the city can muster, from samba to electro and quite a few points in between.
The opening night sees summer faves Samba de Santa Clara hosting things, turning out delightful covers of Jorge Ben Jor standards for the party people to enjoy, and they'll be followed by irreverent party pirates Calzone on the Saturday. Sunday kicks off a little early with some post-beach frolicks courtesy of sambistas Casuarina and special guest Lenine.
The middle weekend kicks off with clothing label and musical tastemaker types Aûslander teaming up with Rocka Rocka for some alternative tunes on Friday 27 January, and things get a little more pop on the Saturday thanks to Modinha and Festa Americana. Sunday sees the current darlings of carioca music Orquestra Voadora and ever popular carnival legends Empolga as 9 go head to head to heat things up on the Sabbath.
Favela Chique open up the final weekend, mixing the styles as only the know how and paving the way for Madureira Disco Clube to get things a little bit glitzy on Saturday 4th alongside the I Love Pop crew. Closing the whole shebang, last year's carnival revelation Sargento Pimenta get passed the baton, giving a wonderfully carioca respray to the Beatles catalogue of hits.
