Deli Bizarra

New York-style deli bringing authentic pizzas to Leblon

Elena Thomas

There is no shortage of pizza restaurants in Zona Sul. Harder to track down is that elusive thin crust, tomato-y base pizza with a decently creative selection of toppings. All of which makes Deli Bizarra an incongruous little find. Tucked away behind the Flamengo training ground in Leblon, this New-York style deli also does a mean cheese steak sandwich and delicious brownies. Still more unusual is that it wasn’t Italians who bought this slice of authenticity to the streets of Rio but best friends Ger Grant and Pedro Widmar, an Irishman and a carioca respectively. The tiny space operates as a takeaway too but you can’t beat pulling up a pew and getting stuck in to a post-beach snack, or sharing a pizza late-on with friends after a few local beers. Order up the chicken wings with some extra spice and get ready to go into lip-tingling heaven.
