The Rio cycling revolution continues. Following hot on the heels of the recent Billabong Pro surf contest and the Rio Marathon, it’s time for the cycling world’s attention to turn to Rio, with the UCI World Tour’s 100k Copa competition. Designed to give amateur cyclists around the world a chance to enter an organised competition, the race is one of 15 qualifying events open to the public, for a chance to compete for the world title in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, on 23-26 August.

Starting and finishing at the home of Carnival, sambódromo’s Marquês de Sapucaí in Centro, the route passes along the edge of Guanabara Bay and through Túnel Novo into Copacabana, running along the Atlantic Coast all the way to São Conrado. There, it climbs significantly above sea level for the first and only time up to Alto da Boa Vista. Descending quickly into Barra da Tijuca from the 300-metre climb, the riders will continue along the beach as far as Avenida Ayrton Senna before looping back and along the beach roads once more to the finish line, more famous for receiving multi-coloured sambistas than lycra’d cyclists.
