Cais do Oriente
The world's best choreographers and a host of would-be dancers descend on the city for the 2013 edition of the Rio H2K - the Hip Hop Kemp battle to find the ultimate dance 'kemp' (champion). Some 250 dancers will be duelling it out across seven categories from 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, while a series of workshops and classes aim to share some of street culture's sharpest moves with the 15,000 or so expected through the doors across the four-day event.
Among those blessing the 'Utopia' warehouse with their experience are USA choreographer Poppin' Pete, who has worked on music videos for the likes of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (Thursday 4pm & Sunday 12.30pm), Jamaica's dancehall legend Crazy Hype (Friday 9am & Saturday 11am), Bieber collaborator Shaun Evaristo (Friday, Saturday 4.30pm & Sunday 3pm) and Marjory Smarth, whose CV includes projects with Ce Ce Peniston and Heavy D (Thursday 1.30pm & Saturday 3pm).
A second, much smaller venue inside Rio's most celebrated choreographer Deborah Caulker's dance school (Rua Benjamin Constante 30, Glória) will host intimate classes with the above artists including an 'intensive' session on the opening day with Laure Courtellemont and Crazy Hype. Friday and Saturday nights will see the DJs join the fray and participants get a chance to show off their new moves, courtesy of Madureura Disco Clube.
