In a city like São Paulo, where a new gallery or cultural event seems to spring up every other week, a festival of independent culture is not merely useful: it’s essential. Luckily for us, Independent Culture Month, a government-sponsored event now entering its sixth year, can help provide a way into the myriad of stuff that’s going on.

With a month of free gigs, screenings and pop-cultural discussions at locations throughout the city, it’s a ready-made way for culture vultures to get a flavour for what the city has to offer.

Highlights

Mano Brown and guests

For free hip hop, head to the Zone Norte for a gig with home-grown talent, rapper Mano Brown, with guests including Emicida.
From 6pm on 16 Sep at the Centro Cultural da Juventude, Avenida Deputado Emílio Carlos, 3641, Vila Nova Cachoeirinha. See the full gig details

Cinetério

One of the highlights of last year’s Independent Culture Month, Cinetério's evening of entertainment includes an open-air horror-movie screening followed by music from DJ Tomash and a show from New York trio Blonde Redhead.
From 6.30pm on 23 Sep in front of the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha cemetery in the Zona Norte, Rua João Marcelino Branco. Read more on Cinetério

The Ex

Another act worth checking out are the Dutch punk band, The Ex, set to play two free gigs – their first dates in Brazil.
8pm on 29 Sep at Centro Cultural da Juventude, Avenida Deputado Emílio Carlos, 3641, Vila Nova Cachoeirinha, and at 5pm on 30 Sep at Centro Cultural São Paulo, Rua Vergueiro 1000, Paraíso. See the full gig details

Audiotour Ficcional

For a listening experience of a different type, Portuguese speakers might try the fictional audiotour of Vila Nova Cachoeirinha. With your headphones on, a specially commissioned story will take you on an imaginary journey among the colourful squares and streets of this bustling northern neighbourhood.
Tours run from 6-29 September, 2-5pm, Thursdays and Fridays; 11-5pm, Saturdays; meet in front of Centro Cultural da Juventude, Avenida Deputado Emílio Carlos, 3641, Vila Nova Cachoeirinha.
