Just a few days after the official Dia da Consciência Negra (black consciousness day) commemorations on 20 November, the Centro Cultural da Juventude in the north of the city will be hosting belated festivities with 'Batuque de Palavras' – an afternoon of African culture with Angolan capoeira, a performance of umbigada (a type of African belly dance), and poetry readings about rebel slave leader Zumbi dos Palmares’s untimely death, beheaded by his captors, aged forty.
