Seeking to present Afro-Brazilian culture through music, dance, literature and sports, the 'Berço de Todos os Cantos' series of events commemorates the annual Dia da Consciência Negra (black consciousness day) at SESC Pinheiros throughout November and December.
You can check out the full lineup of events online at sesc.org.br, but the best place to start is with the afternoon performance by singer and capoeira dancer Dalua and the capoeira master Maurão, blending elements of capoeira with samba de roda, one of the oldest types of samba, originating in Bahia, in the North-East (4pm, 20 November).
Portuguese-speaking grown-ups can listen to the writer, composer and singer Nei Lopes talking about black literature (7.30pm, 30 November), while the kids settle in for some African storytelling with the Cia Mala e Cuia theatre and circus group in the 'África Yià' (Mother Earth) sessions (1pm, 15 and 20 November).
