In a country held to be a ‘racial democracy’, the fact that a black consciousness day is even necessary is telling. Nevertheless, the holiday – on 20 November – commemorates the death of the rebel slave leader Zumbi dos Palmares, and combines music, dance and art in a series of events throughout November and December (see the Berço de Todos os Cantos events at SESC Pinheiros and the Batuque de Palavras afternoon at CCJ).
Another worthwhile event marking the day is the exhibition ‘Gênese e Celebração: Coleção de peças africanas do acervo de Rogério Cerqueira Leite’ (‘Genesis and Celebration: African pieces from Rogério Cerqueira Leite’s Collection’). Running until January at the Pinacoteca, the exhibition is a good way to get familiar with African anthropology, with around 400 African sculptures, masks and artworks from the colonial period up to the present.
