Ever since 2011, when São Paulo’s Virada Sustentável first made sustainability in all its myriad forms its mission, the festival of ecologically-minded events has become an excellent opportunity to check out some of the city’s most interesting green projects, in exhibitions, shows, debates and parties taking place over the course of three days, from 6-9 June.
Parks will host a number of activities, from gardening and composting workshops, yoga classes and picnics in Parque Villa-Lobos, to a sleep workshop, yoga, mediation, tai chi, sacred circle dances, self-massage sessions as well as children's theatre in Parque da Água Branca.
The ceremonial planting of the once nearly-extinct Pau-Brasil tree, with the Memorial da América Latina Foundation president and the Virada Sustentável founder, will open this year's Virada, at 10am on Wednesday. The Memorial da América Latina will host a number of other activities, including a workshop on growing organic vegetables at 11am on Saturday, an exhibition of photographs of arid northern Chile by Ulysses Matandos and a kite-making workshop for kids at noon on Saturday.

Three highlights of the Virada Sustentável
Dance in Parque Villa-Lobos
A variety of activities celebrating body movement takes centre stage on Saturday, including a dance class for the uninitiated general public (10am), a performance by Cia. Brasilidança – 50 young people specialising in various samba and african dances – (noon), and an innovative ballet by a troupe of visually-impared participants (3pm), followed by a workshop (4.30pm). On Sunday, there's also a dance presentation exploring national and global diversity (3pm) with an accompanying workshop (4.30pm).
Feiras de trocas
Got stacks of stuff building up at home? Get rid of it, and get something in exchange at one of these feiras de trocas (bring and buy or swap sales). The first fair, hosted at Tenda do Parquinho da Figueira (Parque Villa-Lobos) at 10am-1pm Saturday, aims to use the event as a way of causing a moment of reflection on consumption while promoting a sense of community. The second, the Mooca Green Movement's fair takes place at 10am-2pm on Saturday at Praça Visconde de Sousa Fontes in Mooca, and is looking for toys or books in good condition to be exchanged.
Sustainable fair at the Mercado Municipal
Over the weekend, the Mercadão will host a series of workshops (in Portuguese) and discussions on everything from organic farming and food wastage to sustainable fashion. Also look out for live music and special whole-food and organic lunches on both days. Don't miss the chance to have a good nose around the plethora or Brazilian and international foods for sale, including a good selection of organic and whole-grain products.
