Photographer Érico Hiller’s photography exhibition 'Ameaçados – Lugares em Risco do Século 21' (‘Threatened – Places at Risk in the 21th Century’) started out as a research project based on the theme of ‘threatened paradises’. Building on this concept, Hiller selected five places across the planet where the fauna, flora and culture were at risk of extinction due to climate change and human interference, and created a collection of images that chronicle the tension between man and nature.
A selection of 45 images take you from Arctic peoples and the melting polar cap, to the ancient culture of the Ethiopians in the Omo Valley under threat from a hydroelectric dam, via urban expansion and the Brazilian rainforests, the melting of mount Kilimanjaro’s ice caps to, finally, the inhabitants of the Maldives, a string of islands under threat from rising sea levels.
Visitors to the exhibition at the Museu da Casa Brasileira can also purchase a copy of a book featuring the complete collection of photographs.
