India and Brazil share a common bright horizon as members of the BRIC group of emerging economies. They’re also both former colonies of Portugal, the source of this ambitious exhibition, which arrives fresh from the CCBB in Rio, alongside the contemporary film festival ‘Bhava: Universo do Cinema Indiano’.

‘India!’ is a kaleidoscopic look at the history of a country of 1.21 billion people, over 200 ethnic groups, six religions and 23 official languages, and is divided into four parts; ‘Man’, ‘God’, ‘Formation of Modern India’ and ‘Contemporary Art’.

‘Man’ represents the everyday lives of Indians over the centuries using mediums like the art of weaving to make saris, and shadow puppets used for storytelling. ‘God’, meanwhile, explores India’s rich religious history through fifty sculptures, miniature paintings, objects and photos.

‘The Formation of Modern India’ uses photography to document more than 100 years of history, from the fight for independence from the British, to today’s Bollywood stars.

The title of the contemporary art section, ‘India – Lado a Lado’, (‘India – Side by Side’, at SESC Belenzinho) is a reference to both the past and present India shares with Brazil and the density and diversity of everyday life in India itself. Eighteen artists and two art collectives living in India present photographs, installations, videos, sculpture and paintings touching on themes such as the meeting of innovation and tradition. In short, a fascinatingly deep exploration of the rich past and ever-evolving present of this nation.
