The sertão, the dry lands of North Eastern Brazil, are an invaluable source of material for Brazilian cultural and artistic expressions. They are also the inspiration for this new multimedia exhibition at the Museu Afro Brasil, ‘O Sertão: da Caatingas, dos Santos, dos Beatos e dos Cabras da Peste’ (‘The Sertão: Of Drylands, Saints, Churchgoers and Troublemakers’).
As the setting for playwright Ariano Suassuna’s religion-themed comedy O Auto da Compadecida, and Graciliano Ramos’s timeless novel, Vidas Secas, about the hardscrabble life in the region, the sertão is known for an ethnically mixed population that lives at the mercy of the forces of nature, informing a mystical world view and unwavering religious beliefs. These literary works are part of the 800-piece exhibition, which includes sculptures, photographs and historical documents, piecing together a portrait of the sertanejo’s daily life and folklore, while video clips and ambient sounds immerse visitors in the culture and atmo-sphere of this simultaneously arid and rich world.
