The Minhocão raised expressway is a perennial feature of life in São Paulo, bending between the apartment blocks and offices with six lanes of traffic rumbling below. But on the 30 June it will be taken over for the day by the São Paulo art movement BaixoCentro's (baixocentro.org) festa junina celebrations. (In case you're wondering, the festa junina is a traditional festival of rural costumes and games with a smidgeon of religious meaning, and there's a whole feature about it here.) In addition to the usual panoply of food, costumes and frivolity offered by other festas, the BaixoCentro festival will include street performers and a collective wedding. A great option for a family outing or anyone interested in getting a different view of the city.
