LED Christmas

Adding some voltage to the holiday cheer

Twinkling palm trees, super-sized Santas and fake snow: just a few of the colourful, dare we say kitsch ways in which São Paulo gears up for Christmas each year. Hundreds of thousands of lights are already amping up the city, snaked around tree trunks in a deluge of colours from Avenida Faria Lima to downtown’s Rua Anhangabaú, and along Rua Sena Madureira, lighting the way to Parque do Ibirapuera.

The park is at the heart of festive illuminations – it’s home to the city’s Christmas tree and nearly a million LEDs, wrapped around over 200 of the park’s trees. Bystanders ooh and ahh as 24 jets shoot up 15 metres from the park’s lake in a choreography of colour (daily at 8.30pm and 9pm, until 6 January.)
