Cultural motherlode in the heart of the city
Sponsored by the Brazilian federal bank and filled with old mechanical counting and lottery machines, maps of the city from a century ago, examples of Brazilian currency notes from throughout history as well as the first credit cards that arrived in the 1980s, this museum is the Praça da Sé centre's highlight. Unfortunately, texts are all in Portuguese only. Nevertheless, the creepy 1930s medical office transcends language barriers. High-quality galleries outside the museum focus on historical photography and document Amazonian tribes, and rotating exhibitions frequently display the works of exemplary artists and photographers.
