Urban art gallery Choque Cultural are staging a double act to wrap up its 2011 schedule with husband-and-wife art duo Chivitz and Minhau. Graffiti artist Chivitz will transform the gallery, inside and out, with a huge installation called ‘Ambíguo’ (‘Ambiguous’). The gallery facade will be given a colourful face lift while inside, a mix of media including photography, video and painting (on canvas, wood and the gallery walls) will combine to create what appear to be animated cartoons.
Chivitz’s partner, Minhau, is also a graffiti artist. Like him, she’s also game for experimenting with different techniques. At ‘Time da Cor’ (‘Colour Team’), she’s displaying her new-found love - sculptures. Each piece takes about two months to create, using fibre glass that is then painted with the sprays and varnish used to paint cars.
The gallery also houses ‘A Escolha do Estandarte’, an installation by carioca artist João Lelo. The installation is part of the ‘Projeto bloco de Rua’ (‘Street Block Project’), inspired by the carnaval street parties from his hometown, Rio de Janeiro.
