Balancing serious issues with a flair for the comic, Berlin artist Martin Willy’s exhibition, 'Passagem', shows his ability to exist with a leg planted in both dark and light worlds. As a São Paulo resident from Berlin, his foreign take on local views grants him an insightful view stemming from his foreign distance – a unique take often lost on native eyes. And while many of the works reflect on urban landscapes from both his hometown and his new city, other mixed media works of animals focus on ecological topics, but with an undeniable humour. The BSE Chicken, for example, depicts a hen reminiscent of the pixelated art of early video games, but the animal is constructed of egg packaging, referring to the cramped spaces of factory farming. Another piece, Geiler Toter Fisch, displays a painted fish made of plastic pieces, coconut tree trunk and copper wire. Willy’s work recalls the effect of pollution on the natural world, and ultimately, us.
