Sculpture by Carmela Gross

There’s a new museum in town – a long-awaited one; and if that matters to you, don’t dream of missing its first exhibition. We’re talking about the new branch of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, the catchily named ‘MAC USP Nova Sede’, a third venue to join the others in nearby Parque Ibirapuera and in the Cidade Universitária (the main campus of the University of São Paulo).
The show ‘O Tridimensional no Acervo do MAC: Uma Antologia’ – ‘The Three-Dimensional in the MAC’s Collection: an Anthology’ – inaugurates the new building with a selection of 17 pieces intended to represent the crisis art has been going through since the Second World War. What it certainly shows is the way traditional concepts of sculpture have changed in the period since 1945, through works by artists like Frida Baranek, Maria Martins and Carmela Gross. And if you don’t believe us, check out the piece by Gross, which looks very much like the Addams Family’s hirsute cousin Itt.
