Emma Thomas kicks off 2012 with two exhibitions: ‘Carrossel’ by Luisa Ritter, an artist originally from Rio Grande do Sul, and ‘Calor’ by the Argentinian artist Federico Lanzi.
‘Calor’ (‘Heat’) is Lanzi’s first solo exhibition in Brazil, in a ten-piece show inspired, in part, by a trip he took to the north-west of Argentina. The powerful images in this show, both drawings and paintings, are testament to the sense of dislocation he felt in the region, so alien to his native Buenos Aires. Beyond paint and pencils, Lanzi also uses materials like plastic, acrylic and glitter, and cites influences ranging from Islamic and Tibetan art to the Austrain and Swiss artists, Franz West and Max Bill, respectively.
It’s also a first-time solo exhibition in São Paulo for Luisa Ritter, who now lives in the city, and whose work has appeared in numerous group shows and publications. In ‘Carrossel’, she uses fabrics, tiles, pieces of wood and paper to create what she calls ‘imperfect narratives’, bursting with vivid colours, like hazy, half remembered images or family photographs repainted from memory.
Note that since Emma Thomas shares a space with Galeria Baró, you get two shows for the price (it’s free!) of one.
