Around 1995, the Belgian artist Trudo Engels decided he no longer wanted to be known by his name. So he created the collective Various Artists, composed of 24 fictitious artists, each with a different personality, and each of whom are him. Thus Engels – all 24 of him – arrives at Luisa Strina to build a colourful castle made from biscuits. But what seems to be every child’s dream is actually a critique of trans fats, sugar and all the other addictive substances that make up most people’s day-to-day diets. The artist Morice de Lisle – the most radical artist in the two-dozen-strong fake collective, who will be creating performances ‘whose rules alter or limit the work of the other Various Artists’ – actually fasted during the production of the installation.
