Raspadinhas

This event has finished

Guga Szabzon is only 24, but she’s already busy questioning the nature of the art market. Here at Transversal, in her first solo exhibition, Szabzon shares with gallery visitors something that she finds puzzling: why are people willing to pay lots of money to have a piece of her work, when she’s so young and untried? Do they really like it? Or are they just taking a bet, like buying a raspadinha (scratch-card), in the hopes that Szabzon will turn out to be some kind of art big shot? You decide; and if you’re feeling lucky, you can buy one of the 184 scratch cards that are part of the display, at R$100 each. Five of them have real art works from the artist under the foil – it’s a question of luck.

Beyond the scratch-cards, Szabzon also takes old maps and turns them into pieces of art using materials like needles, lines and waxed paper, creating a world hedged by imaginary borders and saturated with beautiful colours, leaving the viewer dreaming of all the fictitious countries that might be inside those borders.
