If you still haven’t seen Galeria Leme’s new building, this is the perfect opportunity to check out the space and as a bonus, see two powerful solo exhibitions, one by the Scottish artist David Batchelor and the other by a Lithuanian artist based in New York, Zilvinas Kempinas.

Kempinas’s lines, inspired by astronomy, criss-cross the surface of his panels, creating symmetrical forms that almost make you dizzy if you stare at them for too long.

In his concurrent show, David Batchelor once said in an interview that although he uses objects to make his installations, he doesn’t want people to see them at first. He wants them to see the colours – the vivid, glowing colours that are his speciality, having experimented with them endlessly over the last 20 years.

In the works he  has produced specifically for ‘Slugfest’, this solo exhibition at Galeria Leme, colourful neon lights illuminate pipes with different sizes and angles, creating beautiful reflections in the shiny floor of this most concrete of galleries.

The artist made the pieces here in São Paulo, having formed an attachment to the city in 2004, when he took part in the 26th Bienal de Arte. Using salvaged scrap, Batchelor contrasts the dull sheen of old metal and pitted, rusty pipes with delicate, glowing light, which works to dissolve the hard forms from the old tubes and the hard flatness from the gallery’s floor, replacing them with multicoloured reflections and a luminous warmth.
