Find out who’s who in Brazil’s contemporary photography scene at this exhibition, which shows about a hundred images from the doughty Pirelli/MASP collection. This year’s theme is ‘Photographers who became icons of Brazilian photography’, and it contains images by Alécio de Andrade, Claudia Andujar, Geraldo De Barros, Mario Cravo Neto, Marcel Gautherot, José Medeiros, Rosângela Rennó, Miguel Rio Branco, Otto Stupakoff and Pierre Verger.
If that sound like one hell of a lot of names, here’s a tip, or at least a personal fascination: Mario Cravo Neto’s stunning mainly black-and-white images, which show flashes of Brazil – deep Brazil – in all its beauty, grittiness and mystery.
The show is in its 19th edition, and brings a selection this time that contains some 30 new acquisitions. The Pirelli/MASP collection contains more than a thousand photographs taken since the 1990s.
