As one of the original Pop Art practitioners – although he might demur at the title – the greatest talent of Jasper Johns has been to make people stop in their tracks and think. This was the certainly the case with Flag (1954-55), which used encaustic wax on old newspaper to transform the US flag from its iconic, duotone purity into a symbol of ambiguity and unease, capturing perfectly the anxiety gnawing at the root of America in the age of McCarthyism and the Cold War. This exhibition, with 70 works dating from 1960 onwards, reveals the depth of effect which Johns’s appropriation of popular iconography – alongside his frequent use of contradiction and paradox – can have. It also reveals the tremendous debt owed to him by later abstract painters such as Rothko.
