5 x Favela – Agora por nós mesmos: review

Two young men hang out in one of Rio's favelas

Seven directors, five stories, one world: the Brazilian favela. In the film 5X Favela – Agora por nós mesmos, the directors Manaíra Carneiro, Wagner Novais, Rodrigo Felha, Cacau Amaral, Luciano Vidigal, Cadu Barcelos, and Luciana Bezerra gather their stories, inspired by their own experiences inside the favela, and present them from a different point of view. This is the first Brazilian movie completely conceived, written and filmed by young ex-favelados and it received much acclaim at Cannes this year.

Each episode of the film tells a story, comically tragic and tragically comic, reflecting daily favela life without focusing on headline-grabbing violence.

Avoiding stereotypes seen in recent movies set in favelas was one of the main concerns for the directors. ‘There is tragedy in the favela, but there is also lots and lots of humor. And since the directors came from that environment, they absorbed that and put in to the big screen’, says Rodrigo Felha, one of the directors.
